European & International Fellowships

Beatriu de Pinós Programme

  • Description: Supports the recruitment of postdoctoral researchers into the Catalan science and technology system. Researchers may freely choose their own research project in any field.
  • Duration: 3 years.
  • Eligibility: At least 2 years of postdoctoral experience outside Spain; must have lived or worked outside Spain for at least 2 years in the 3 years prior to the deadline.
  • Deadline: Mid March.

Juan de la Cierva

  • Description: Encourages the recruitment of young doctors for postdoctoral training at Spanish R&D centres other than those where they completed their PhD.
  • Duration: 2 years.
  • Eligibility: Doctorate obtained within the eligibility window defined by the call.
  • Deadline: Mid January.

Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship

  • Description: Supports experienced researchers looking to advance their career through an international research stay.
  • Duration: 1 to 2 years.
  • Eligibility: Researchers based in the EU or associated countries, with a PhD and up to 8 years of research experience.
  • Deadline: Early September.

EMBO Long-Term Postdoctoral Fellowship

  • Description: Supports excellent postdoctoral researchers in laboratories throughout Europe and the world. International exchange is a key requirement.
  • Duration: 2 years.
  • Eligibility: See EMBO Fellowship guidelines.
  • Deadline: No deadline (rolling).

HFSP Long-Term Postdoctoral Fellowship

  • Description: For applicants with a PhD in a biological discipline who wish to broaden their expertise with a project significantly different from their previous work.
  • Duration: 3 years.
  • Eligibility: See HFSP eligibility.
  • Deadline: Second half of August.

HFSP Cross-Disciplinary Postdoctoral Fellowship

  • Description: For applicants with a PhD from outside the life sciences (e.g. physics, chemistry, mathematics, engineering, or computer science) who want to apply their expertise to biology.
  • Duration: 3 years.
  • Eligibility: See HFSP eligibility.
  • Deadline: Second half of August.

La Caixa Junior Leader Retaining

  • Description: “la Caixa” Foundation grants postdoctoral fellowships for researchers of any nationality to carry out a STEM research project in Spain or Portugal.
  • Duration: 3 years.
  • Eligibility: PhD obtained between two and seven years prior to the call deadline; at least 6 months of international research stay; must have resided in Spain for more than 12 months in the three preceding years.
  • Deadline: Fall.

Country-Specific Fellowships

🇺🇸 USA — Life Science Research Foundation Award

  • Description: Provides three years of support to a named postdoctoral researcher at a non-profit university or research institution.
  • Duration: 3 years.
  • Eligibility: U.S. citizens only; must apply within 5 years of receiving their PhD.
  • Deadline: Rolling.

🇯🇵 Japan — Canon Foundation Research Fellowships

  • Description: Grants up to 15 fellowships annually to European and Japanese researchers for research exchanges between Japan and Europe.
  • Duration: 3 months to 1 year.
  • Eligibility: Japanese researchers coming to Europe; Master’s or PhD obtained within the last ten years.
  • Deadline: September.

🇸🇪 Sweden — Swedish Research Council International Postdoc

  • Description: Gives newly qualified researchers from Swedish universities the opportunity to expand their networks and competences by working abroad.
  • Duration: 18 months to 3 years.
  • Eligibility: Doctoral degree from a Swedish university, completed no more than 2 years before the grant period starts.
  • Deadline: February (spring call) or September (fall call).
