Short Stays & Visiting Grants

EMBO Scientific Exchange Grants

  • Description: EMBO Scientific Exchange Grants support research exchanges between laboratories in EMBC Member States, Associated Member States or Cooperation Partners.
  • Duration: One week up to three months.
  • Eligibility: Active researchers with a minimum of one year of research experience at the PhD student level or equivalent.
  • Deadline: None (rolling).

Doctoral Fellowships

Joan Oró Grant

  • Description: Grant for public and private universities of the Catalan university system, research centres, and hospital foundations to hire predoctoral research staff.
  • Duration: 3 years.
  • Eligibility: Joan Oró Grant Eligibility.
  • Deadline: Fall.

FPU

  • Description: Predoctoral contracts for the completion of doctoral theses in Spanish universities.
  • Duration: 4 years.

Ramon Areces Grant

  • Description: The Ramón Areces Foundation finances contracts for the completion of doctoral theses in doctoral programmes at Spanish universities and research centres, with a focus on excellence in science and technology.
  • Duration: 3 years.

  • Deadline: Fall.

La Caixa INPhINIT Retaining

  • Description: “la Caixa” Foundation grants 30 fellowships for researchers of any nationality who wish to pursue a doctorate in any discipline at any university or research centre in Spain or Portugal.
  • Duration: 3 years.
  • Eligibility: Candidates must be in the first four years of their research career and must not have previously been awarded a PhD. Must have resided in Spain/Portugal for more than twelve months in the three years prior to the call deadline.
  • Deadline: Spring.

Country-Specific Fellowships

🇧🇷 Brazil — CAPES Sandwich Doctorate Abroad (PDSE)

  • Description: CAPES programme funding short overseas research stays for PhD students enrolled in CAPES-accredited programmes in Brazil. The stay should prioritise research in fields less consolidated in Brazil. Benefits include a monthly stipend, travel and installation allowances, and health insurance.
  • Duration: 4 to 9 months.
  • Eligibility: Must be enrolled in a CAPES-recognised PhD programme in Brazil; applications are submitted through the home institution; foreign language proficiency required; cannot be combined with another scholarship for the same purpose from a Brazilian funding agency.
  • Deadline: Two calls per year (typically August–October and February–March).

🇧🇷 Brazil — CAPES Full Doctorate Abroad (Doutorado Pleno)

  • Description: CAPES programme funding a complete doctoral degree at an international institution of excellence, open to all fields of knowledge. Aims to boost international scientific collaboration and the global visibility of Brazilian research. Benefits include a monthly stipend, installation allowance, and health insurance.
  • Duration: Up to 48 months (12-month grants, renewable annually upon satisfactory academic performance).
  • Eligibility: Brazilian researchers with high academic performance aiming at internationally recognised institutions; cannot be combined with another scholarship for the same purpose from a Brazilian funding agency. Note: the last known open call was in 2017/2018; check the CAPES website for current programme status before applying.
  • Deadline: Check the CAPES website (programme has been suspended; verify whether new calls have been announced).

European & International Fellowships

Beatriu de Pinós Programme

  • Description: Supports the recruitment of postdoctoral researchers into the Catalan science and technology system. Researchers may freely choose their own research project in any field.
  • Duration: 3 years.
  • Eligibility: At least 2 years of postdoctoral experience outside Spain; must have lived or worked outside Spain for at least 2 years in the 3 years prior to the deadline.
  • Deadline: Mid March.

Juan de la Cierva

  • Description: Encourages the recruitment of young doctors for postdoctoral training at Spanish R&D centres other than those where they completed their PhD.
  • Duration: 2 years.
  • Eligibility: Doctorate obtained within the eligibility window defined by the call.
  • Deadline: Mid January.

Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship

  • Description: Supports experienced researchers looking to advance their career through an international research stay.
  • Duration: 1 to 2 years.
  • Eligibility: Researchers based in the EU or associated countries, with a PhD and up to 8 years of research experience.
  • Deadline: Early September.

EMBO Long-Term Postdoctoral Fellowship

  • Description: Supports excellent postdoctoral researchers in laboratories throughout Europe and the world. International exchange is a key requirement.
  • Duration: 2 years.
  • Eligibility: See EMBO Fellowship guidelines.
  • Deadline: No deadline (rolling).

HFSP Long-Term Postdoctoral Fellowship

  • Description: For applicants with a PhD in a biological discipline who wish to broaden their expertise with a project significantly different from their previous work.
  • Duration: 3 years.
  • Eligibility: See HFSP eligibility.
  • Deadline: Second half of August.

HFSP Cross-Disciplinary Postdoctoral Fellowship

  • Description: For applicants with a PhD from outside the life sciences (e.g. physics, chemistry, mathematics, engineering, or computer science) who want to apply their expertise to biology.
  • Duration: 3 years.
  • Eligibility: See HFSP eligibility.
  • Deadline: Second half of August.

La Caixa Junior Leader Retaining

  • Description: “la Caixa” Foundation grants postdoctoral fellowships for researchers of any nationality to carry out a STEM research project in Spain or Portugal.
  • Duration: 3 years.
  • Eligibility: PhD obtained between two and seven years prior to the call deadline; at least 6 months of international research stay; must have resided in Spain for more than 12 months in the three preceding years.
  • Deadline: Fall.

Country-Specific Fellowships

🇺🇸 USA — Life Science Research Foundation Award

  • Description: Provides three years of support to a named postdoctoral researcher at a non-profit university or research institution.
  • Duration: 3 years.
  • Eligibility: U.S. citizens only; must apply within 5 years of receiving their PhD.
  • Deadline: Rolling.

🇯🇵 Japan — Canon Foundation Research Fellowships

  • Description: Grants up to 15 fellowships annually to European and Japanese researchers for research exchanges between Japan and Europe.
  • Duration: 3 months to 1 year.
  • Eligibility: Japanese researchers coming to Europe; Master’s or PhD obtained within the last ten years.
  • Deadline: September.

🇸🇪 Sweden — Swedish Research Council International Postdoc

  • Description: Gives newly qualified researchers from Swedish universities the opportunity to expand their networks and competences by working abroad.
  • Duration: 18 months to 3 years.
  • Eligibility: Doctoral degree from a Swedish university, completed no more than 2 years before the grant period starts.
  • Deadline: February (spring call) or September (fall call).

🇩🇰 Denmark — Carlsberg Foundation Internationalisation Fellowships

  • Description: Promotes internationalisation of talented young researchers from Denmark, Greenland, and the Faroe Islands through a postdoctoral stay at one or two leading international research institutions, followed by reintegration into the Danish, Greenlandic, or Faroese research environment. Covers full salary plus DKK 8,000/month in operating expenses.
  • Duration: 2–3 years (international stay must comprise at least half the total project period).
  • Eligibility: PhD from a Danish, Greenlandic, or Faroese institution, obtained within 3 years of the application deadline; must demonstrate a strong connection to Danish, Greenlandic, or Faroese research; not yet spent 12 or more months at international institutions after the PhD.
  • Deadline: April 1 (yearly).
