Protist genomics: key to understanding eukaryotic evolution

Abstract

All eukaryotes other than animals, plants, and fungi are protists. Protists are highly diverse and fill fundamental ecological roles across all ecosystems. Despite their importance, protists remain understudied compared to other eukaryotic lineages. Here we review recent advances in protist genomics and discuss the opportunities and challenges for the field, including the need for expanded culture collections, improved reference databases, and integration of multi-omic approaches.
