A meta-analysis of the stony coral tissue loss disease microbiome finds key bacteria in unaffected and lesion tissue in diseased colonies

Abstract

Stony coral tissue loss disease (SCTLD) has been causing significant whole colony mortality on reefs throughout the Caribbean since 2014. The etiology of SCTLD remains poorly understood. Here, we perform a meta-analysis of published SCTLD microbiome studies to identify consistent microbial signatures associated with diseased tissue and to evaluate potential causative agents.
