Molecular diversity and distribution of marine fungi across 130 European environmental samples

Abstract

Environmental DNA and culture-based analyses have suggested that fungi are present in low diversity in marine sediments relative to other fungal habitats. Contrary to this view, we show that marine sediments contain remarkable fungal diversity. Our analyses identify major lineages of predominantly marine fungi, including a novel deep-branching chytrid-like lineage.
