Identifying protist consumers of photosynthetic picoeukaryotes in the surface ocean using stable isotope probing

Abstract

Photosynthetic picoeukaryotes contribute a significant fraction of primary production in the upper ocean. These organisms live in the photic zone and are subject to diel cycles of light and dark. Here we use metatranscriptomics to identify the key photosynthetic picoeukaryotes in the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre and characterize their diel gene expression patterns.
