Implications of dietary carbon incorporation in fish carbonates for the global carbon cycle

Abstract

Brine pools in deep-sea environments provide unique perspectives into planetary and geological processes. Here we characterize the microbial communities associated with a newly discovered brine pool in the Red Sea using amplicon sequencing and metagenomics. We identify novel microbial lineages and discuss the implications of brine pool microbiology for understanding life in extreme environments and potential extraterrestrial habitats.
