Marine Protists Are Not Just Big Bacteria

Abstract

The study of marine microbial ecology has been completely transformed by molecular and genomic data: the number of known organisms has exploded, new lineages have been identified, and new processes revealed. Here we review the current state of knowledge of marine microbial diversity, from bacteria and archaea to the full diversity of eukaryotes.
