Towards a trait-based framework for protist ecology and evolution

Abstract

Protists comprise the vast majority of eukaryotic genetic and functional diversity. While they have been extensively surveyed using environmental DNA approaches, the ecological roles of most protist lineages remain poorly understood. Here, we review current knowledge on protist ecology and discuss strategies for linking protist identity to function, including the development of new cultivation methods, single-cell approaches, and the integration of multi-omic data.
