The ‘other’ coral symbiont: Ostreobium diversity and distribution

Abstract

Ostreobium is an endolithic algal genus thought to be an early-diverging lineage of the Bryopsidales (Chlorophyta). Ostreobium is remarkable for its ability to colonize coral skeletons and other calcareous substrates and for its tolerance of extremely low light environments. Here we perform molecular surveys and single-cell genomics to characterize the diversity and ecology of Ostreobium.
