The others: our biased perspective of eukaryotic genomes

Abstract

Understanding the origin and evolution of the eukaryotic cell and the full diversity of eukaryotes is one of the major challenges in biology. Culture-independent molecular surveys have revealed large amounts of uncharacterized eukaryotic diversity - the so-called ‘dark matter’ of eukaryotic life. We argue that a thorough investigation of the genomic and cellular biology of these organisms is crucial for understanding eukaryotic evolution.
