Differential apicomplexan presence predicts thermal stress mortality in the Mediterranean coral Paramuricea clavata

Abstract

Paramuricea clavata is an ecosystem architect of the Mediterranean temperate reefs that is currently declining due to climate change-induced mortality. Here we characterize the microbiome of P. clavata using metabarcoding, with a particular focus on microeukaryotes. We identify differential microbiome compositions between healthy and diseased colonies, and report new potential pathogens among the microeukaryotic fraction of the coral microbiome.
